Birol Altınkılıç, Founder of Kahve Dünyası and Altınmarka, Passed Away
Birol Altınkılıç, one of Turkey's significant entrepreneurs in the cocoa, chocolate, and coffee sectors, passed away at the age of 66. The death of the founder of Altınmarka Group and Kahve Dünyası was announced to the public on August 16, 2026. Various news sources reported the cause of death as a heart attack.
Altınkılıç's impact on the sector is not limited to a growing coffee chain across Turkey. The structure he established transformed into a vertical food ecosystem that spans from raw material and industrial production to retail reaching the final consumer.
Industrial Production Journey Starting in 1992
According to the official company history of Altınmarka, the company was founded in 1992. In 1994, the industrial cocoa processing facility was commissioned, and in 2005, industrial chocolate production began. In 2009, the Detay production facility focusing on semi-finished and finished chocolate products was established.
Birol Altınkılıç's role during the founding period is clearly documented in the company's own archives; Altınmarka states that the initiative that began in 1992 evolved into a cocoa and chocolate structure that also produced outside of Turkey in the following years.
In this respect, Altınkılıç's business model was based on establishing a production infrastructure before creating a known brand in retail. Investments in cocoa processing, industrial chocolate, and semi-finished production formed the production base from which consumer brands could later grow.
Kahve Dünyası Started in Eminönü in 2004
The most visible step on the consumer side was Kahve Dünyası.
According to the brand's official history, the first Kahve Dünyası store opened in 2004 in Istanbul Eminönü. The company states that it currently operates with over 300 stores and more than 1000 sales points in over 40 cities. The first international store opened in 2011 at Piccadilly Circus in London.
In Kahve Dünyası's growth model, the integration of production and retail stood out. The brand emphasizes that it supports its products in the coffee, chocolate, pastry, and ice cream categories with its own production infrastructure and directly manages its stores.
This structure allowed the combination of Altınmarka's industrial production experience with café operations reaching the consumer within the same group.
A Model Extending from Producer to Consumer Brand
Understanding Birol Altınkılıç's sectoral legacy particularly highlights the relationship between Altınmarka and Kahve Dünyası.
On one side, there is the industrial processing of cocoa and chocolate, and on the other side, there are coffee retail and consumer products. According to Kahve Dünyası's current corporate information, Altınmarka Group today defines its operations under three main areas: cocoa and chocolate, consumer products, and retail.
This model also holds significance from a HORECA perspective. While café or restaurant brands often grow based on external suppliers, the Altınmarka-Kahve Dünyası structure combined production capacity with retail operations within the same framework.
This choice created a different operational model in terms of product development, supply continuity, quality standardization, and the transfer of new products to the store network. However, it should not be overlooked that such a structure also requires the joint management of production facilities, logistics, human resources, and retail operations.
One of the Actors in the Scale Change in the Coffee Sector
Kahve Dünyası's journey, which started in 2004 with a single store, has now reached a network of hundreds of stores, coinciding with the transformation of coffee consumption and the chain café market in Turkey. The brand's expansion abroad also did not limit this growth to the Turkish market.
Therefore, Altınkılıç's influence cannot only be evaluated through the founding of a brand. The integration of production investments in industrial cocoa and chocolate with the growth of the retail coffee market within the same group created a remarkable example of scale and integration in the Turkish food sector. Altınmarka's corporate history also shows that the company gradually developed cocoa processing, industrial chocolate, and final product production after 1992.
Birol Altınkılıç is Being Farewelled on His Final Journey
According to the funeral program shared by Altınmarka Group, a funeral prayer for Birol Altınkılıç is planned to be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Levent Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa Mosque in Istanbul, followed by his burial at Ulus Cemetery. The family also announced that a prayer program would be held that same evening at Shangri-La Bosphorus.
The family also requested that no wreaths be sent and that those who wish can make donations to various education, health, environment, and child-focused non-governmental organizations.
Stafflink's View
It is still early to evaluate the company's future after the passing of a founder. It would not be accurate to speculate on decisions regarding management, partnerships, or strategy that have not been disclosed by the company.
However, there is a clear lesson in the business model left behind by Birol Altınkılıç from a sector perspective: behind a strong brand visible to the consumer, there is a production, supply, product development, and operational infrastructure.
In our view, the production-retail connection established over the years between Altınmarka and Kahve Dünyası will remain one of the important examples of how the coffee and chocolate sectors in Turkey can scale between industry and retail.
We extend our condolences to Birol Altınkılıç's family, relatives, colleagues, and the employees of Altınmarka Group and Kahve Dünyası.
