Due to the 39th International Çanakkale Strait Swimming Competition, the Çanakkale–Eceabat and Çanakkale–Kilitbahir ferry services will be temporarily suspended on the morning of August 30. A special traffic arrangement will be implemented in the strait between 08:00 and 11:00, and the resumption of services will depend on the confirmation that the last athlete has exited the water. Additional services are planned for the Kabatepe–Gökçeada line on the same day to accommodate the expected crowd.

Two Ferry Lines in Çanakkale Will Be Temporarily Suspended on August 30

The 39th International Çanakkale Strait Swimming Competition, held on August 30 in celebration of Victory Day, will temporarily alter local maritime transport in the morning hours.

As part of the traffic arrangement coordinated by the Regional Port Authority, ship traffic between Kilitbahir and Nara Burnu will be managed according to the safety of the competition between 08:00 and 11:00. Regular ferry services on the Çanakkale–Eceabat and Çanakkale–Kilitbahir lines will also be temporarily suspended.

The competition is scheduled to start at 08:30 and is expected to last approximately two hours. However, the resumption of ferry services will not solely depend on the end of the announced duration of the competition. Services will resume upon the instruction of the Regional Port Authority after confirming that no athletes remain in the water.

More than 1,500 athletes are expected

According to information shared by officials from the Çanakkale Rotary Club to Anadolu Agency, more than 1,500 athletes are expected to participate in the 39th edition of the competition.

The event takes place in an open water course starting from the Eceabat shore and extending to the Çanakkale side. The Çanakkale Rotary Club positions the event not only as a sports organization but also as an annual event contributing to the promotion, tourism, and economic activity of the city.

This scale explains why the strait traffic is being closed in a controlled manner. The competition involving hundreds of athletes simultaneously in a waterway with international ship traffic and local ferry routes necessitates prioritizing navigation safety during the competition.

The two affected lines are Çanakkale–Eceabat and Çanakkale–Kilitbahir

The regulation reported by the Tourism Agency focuses directly on two lines:

Çanakkale–Eceabat.

Çanakkale–Kilitbahir.

The ferries on these routes will not operate during the competition. It is anticipated that the 08:00 services will be the last reciprocal services before the interruption, and the lines will remain closed until approximately 11:00. However, the final opening time will depend on maritime safety checks.

This detail is particularly important for tour groups and transfer programs.

Making a fixed schedule stating, "Services will definitely start at 11:00" may not be accurate. The completion of the competition, the exit of athletes from the water, and the approval process from the port authority may vary by a few minutes.

The Gökçeada line continues; additional services are available

It should not be assumed that the regulation on August 30 applies to all Çanakkale ferries.

According to GESTAŞ's current announcement, additional services have been planned for the Kabatepe–Gökçeada line to accommodate the holiday period crowd.

The program published as of August 29 includes additional services on Sunday, August 30, departing from Kabatepe at 08:00, 10:00, and 12:00; and from Gökçeada at 06:00, 08:00, and 10:00.

Therefore, the headline "Ferries will stop on August 30" should not be applied to all maritime transport in Çanakkale.

The temporary interruption applies only to two local lines related to the competition route in the strait, while capacity is being increased on the Gökçeada line to accommodate holiday traffic.

Why is a few hours of interruption important for hotels and tour operators?

A three-hour transportation arrangement may seem minor.

However, in tourism operations, especially when working with a transfer chain, its impact can be significant.

Guests departing from hotels in Eceabat and the Gallipoli Peninsula.

Agencies organizing day trips to the memorial area.

Businesses transferring staff or guests between Çanakkale center and the European side.

Tour groups planning bus schedules according to ferry crossings.

All of these may experience delays in the morning schedule.

For example, a tour planned to cross to the other side at 09:00 may not be sufficient to change only the ferry time. Subsequent museum reservations, guide meetings, lunch, and bus schedules may also need to be adjusted according to the new time.

August 30 is also a busy travel day

This year, August 30 coinciding with a Sunday means that weekend travel activity aligns with Victory Day programs on the same day.

Çanakkale is one of the destinations that experiences strong demand during this period, both for memorial and historical tourism as well as island and coastal tourism.

Therefore, the most important issue for businesses is not the interruption itself but ensuring that guests are informed in a timely manner.

It would be insufficient for hotel reception to simply say "ferry canceled" to the guest.

Which line?

What times?

Are there alternative routes?

Where can current services be checked?

All of this needs to be communicated together.

Not giving a definite time in guest communication is safer

One of the common mistakes made by tourism businesses in such temporary transportation arrangements is to present the estimated end time in the initial announcement as a definite departure time.

In this case, the competition is planned to last approximately 120 minutes. However, the official traffic arrangement is scheduled between 08:00 and 11:00, and normal traffic will not resume until it is confirmed that the last athlete has exited the water.

Therefore, hotels and agencies should inform guests:

"It will definitely open at 11:00"

instead of,

"Normal services are expected to resume after approximately 11:00, subject to security approval from the port authority"

This small difference in wording, which may seem minor from an operational perspective, can reduce incorrect expectations and complaints.

Event tourism creates both interruption and demand simultaneously

The swimming competition limits transportation for a few hours on one hand while bringing participants, companions, and visitors to Çanakkale on the other.

The Çanakkale Rotary Club also highlights the contribution of the organization to tourism and the local economy among its goals. Considering the participation of more than 1,500 athletes, a certain level of activity can be expected in accommodation, dining, and local transportation.

Therefore, the impact of large-scale sports organizations at the city level is not limited to just the headline "traffic will be closed".

If planned correctly, the event can create tourism demand while businesses need to incorporate temporary transportation restrictions into their operations in advance.

In our view, the message of this development for businesses is quite practical:

Tourism operations are not managed solely by the hotel or the tour's own program; the transportation schedule of the destination is also part of the product.

Especially in destinations like Çanakkale, where ferry connections are crucial for daily mobility, hotels and agencies should monitor major events, road closures, and maritime traffic arrangements in their daily operational meetings.

A few hours of service interruption can be easily managed with proper communication.

However, if the guest only learns about it upon arriving at the pier, the same situation can directly turn into a service problem.

Therefore, for tourism businesses using the Çanakkale–Eceabat and Çanakkale–Kilitbahir lines on the morning of August 30, the best approach would be to advance transfer times or schedule them for after the interruption and recheck the status of the last service from GESTAŞ's current announcements.
