Coffee Grounds Transforming into Biodegradable Straws: Circular Economy Opens a New Field in HORECA
The coffee grounds that emerge after coffee consumption are preparing to transform from being merely organic waste into the raw material for a new generation of biodegradable products. Sunar NP, a producer of bioplastics in Turkey, announced that it has developed a new material that can be used in the production of biodegradable straws by combining coffee and other food waste with biopolymer technology. According to the company's statement, the developed raw material is designed as part of a circular economy approach aimed at reintegrating organic waste generated after consumption back into the economy.
With regulations on single-use plastics gaining momentum, investments and R&D efforts for bio-based alternatives in the food and beverage sector are also increasing. The compostable packaging market is projected to reach 82.03 billion USD by 2026 and exceed 130 billion USD by 2033.
Coffee Waste Creating Value for the Second Time
In the system developed by the company, coffee and other organic food waste are processed with advanced biopolymer technologies to be transformed into a new raw material that can be used in biodegradable products. Thus, organic waste that would normally need to be disposed of is included in the reproduction cycle. The company states that this material, which can be biologically decomposed under suitable composting conditions, could serve as an alternative to single-use plastic products.
Sunar NP's current product portfolio also includes biodegradable compounds for straw production. The company indicates that these products are developed according to international compostability standards such as EN 13432 and ASTM D6400.
Why Should the HORECA Sector Be Concerned?
For café and restaurant businesses, coffee grounds are often seen as part of waste management. However, such applications demonstrate that waste can transform into a new industrial input.
Especially the separate collection of coffee grounds generated in large coffee chains and high-volume beverage operations may pave the way for the widespread adoption of recovery-focused supply models in the future. This approach not only reduces the amount of waste but can also create new opportunities for businesses that engage in sustainability reporting.
The Search for Plastic Alternatives is Growing
Regulations aimed at reducing the use of single-use plastics in many markets, especially in Europe, are increasing the demand for bio-based and compostable products. In parallel, packaging manufacturers and raw material developers are focusing on transforming agricultural and food by-products into higher value-added materials.
However, sustainability is not limited to the product being bio-based. For compostable products to provide environmental benefits, appropriate collection, sorting, and industrial composting infrastructures must also be in place. Therefore, bioplastic solutions can yield more meaningful results when evaluated alongside waste management systems.
Stafflink's View
The use of coffee grounds in value-added products like biodegradable straws could be one of the examples that can change the HORECA sector's perspective on waste. However, the real impact of such projects will emerge not only from developing new materials but also from separating waste at the source, collecting it logistically, and supporting it with compost infrastructure.
In the upcoming period, the competition for sustainability seems to be shaped not only by using a different material instead of plastic but also by how businesses manage their entire resource cycle.
